An infirmary was built on 44 acres of grounds at Whipps Cross for the Leytonstone Workhouse. Construction started in 1900 and was completed in 1903. Two massive towers are landmarks of the locality. The buildings cost ?186,000 to construct, which was criticised at the time for being extravagant.

Whipps Cross is an NHS University Hospital in Leytonstone, North-east London. It is geographically close to the site of the 2012 Olympics, and has one of the largest and busiest A and E departments in the UK and serves a diverse multi-ethnic community from Chigwell to Leyton. London's North Circular Road and the M11 motorway provide quick access from surrounding areas.Whipps Cross University Hospital NHS Trust aims to put patients first and improve the health of individuals through high quality, cost effective services. It provides healthcare services to people mainly from Waltham Forest, west Redbridge, Essex and east London, funded by local primary care trusts.

The author of this website, David A Viniker MD FRCOG was appointed as a consultant in 1985. In addition to clinical practice in obstetrics and gynaecology, he has run a busy reproductive endocrinology and infertility service. As he has a special interest on the application of computer science to medicine, he chaired the committees established by the  Managers to oversee the implementation of computer systems running the PAS (patient administration system, the maternity records and the theatre suites). He has played an active role in the education of medical students attending The Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and has regularly lectured on reproductive endocrinology and infertility on the MRCOG course.

Undergraduate Teaching at Whipps Cross University Hospital

This is a university teaching hospital internationally renowned for its exceptional teaching and outstanding quality. It's well organised clinical and non-clinical seminars and lectures are taught by leading doctors, maintaining the NHS Trust's high standards. St Matthews students come to complete their 46 weeks core rotations in GP, Internal Medicine, Surgery, Paediatrics, Psychiatry, and Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

Postgraduate teaching

TheMedical Education Centreat Whipps Cross is one of the most active in the UK. It runs the following courses.

DOHNS The purpose of the Diploma of Otolaryngology ? Head and Neck Surgery is to test the breadth and knowledge, the clinical and communications skills and the professional attributes considered appropriate by the College for a doctor intending to undertake practice within an Otolaryngology department in a non consultant career grade or trainee position.
MRCOG This course provides extensive tuition in answering written questions. It also includes a wide-ranging series of lectures, given by distinguished visiting speakers. The course aims to address all the recent changes in the MRCOG examination
MRCOG OSCE This is an intensive preparatory course which includes each candidate participating in three 12 station OSCE circuits
MRCGP Emphasis on examination technique, including Viva sessions. Sessions on all parts of the examination MCQ, MEQ, CRQ, Mock MCQ and assessment of consulting skills.
Higher Surgery Course Designed specifically to prepare candidates for the Intercollegiate Specialty Examination in General Surgery, this intensive seven day (60 hour) course offers:
  • Clinical Sessions
  • Practise vivas in general and sub-specialty surgery, critical care and academic surgery
  • Tutorials on sub-speciality topics (parallel sessions)
  • Authoritative state of the art lectures

MRCP Part II Paces Course
  • Close supervision from experienced senior teachers
  • PACES style short cases across the spectrum of medicine
  • Communication Skills
  • Over 60 typical MRCP cases
Communication Skills for MRCPCH Clinical Examination The course will put great emphasis on small group sessions, including case scenario role play involving professional actors.
ENT Study Day for GPs and GP Registrars This includes practical 'hands on' training in ENT assessment. Participants rotate through several teaching stations. Assessment  includes examination of patients and interactive discussions covering aspects of management. Lectures are clinical practice orientated.
Practical ENT Introductory Course This intensive 1 day practically orientated course is ideal for FY1, FY2 and GP VTS Trainees and for the person about to start his/her 1st ENT post or would like a refresher on how to manage common ENT emergencies they will encounter.

Foundation Training Programme at Whipps Cross All graduates leaving medical school in 2005 will undertake a 2 year Foundation Programme. The purpose is to ensure that all doctors achieve competence in a range of generic and acute care skills, as well as developing their communication and team working abilities, and this will be underpinned by a formal assessment process.

There is an excellent multidisciplinary library which is located in the Medical Education Centre building.

The hospital has its own radio service, a registered charity founded in 1969 by the Walthamstow Lions Club to provide entertainment and information to the patients and staff. The station has been broadcasting 24 hours a day since 2004. During the football season there are often live commentaries from West Ham
