Very bad news leads to a number of ‘shock’ reactions. A diagnosis of cancer is likely to result in initial numbness and a feeling of unreality. There may be anger. Some go into denial and others may start to blame themselves and at times those who have been caring for them. Fear of the disease and treatment are likely to follow. There may be bereavement with feeling of loss of an organ if hysterectomy (hysterectomy)for example is required and perhaps grief for the potential loss of valuable years. Family and friends are also likely to go through this emotional turmoil.
