Abstract:
The vulval pain syndromes (vulval vestibulitis and dysaesthetic vulvodynia) describe a heterogeneous group of women with a clinical presentation reflecting physical, behavioural, psychological and psychosexual factors. As with other chronic pain syndromes a specific cause remains elusive and the condition is probably multifactorial. A multidisciplinary approach to the syndromes is likely to be of benefit to address the many complex issues surrounding vulval pain. In addition to the clinician, clinical psychologists, psychosexual counsellors, pain management teams, physiotherapists and support groups all have a role to play. For some women who fail to respond to treatment, living and coping with pain become key issues in management.
