Fibroids can be removed surgically (myomectomy -17) and the uterus conserved. This is beneficial if you have large fibroids, particularly if the fibroids are distorting the cavity of your womb. It has been estimated that during one per cent of myomectomies, hysterectomy has to be performed, as there may be uncontrollable bleeding. Medical suppression of the menstrual cycle with a gonadotrophic releasing hormone agonist (gonadotrophins) may be employed pre-operatively to produce a temporary menopause-like state. This reduces the size of the fibroids and also their blood supply. Myomectomy is generally undertaken for younger women who wish to retain their fertility.
