What is cervical cautery?

If there is cervical ectopy (cervical erosion) the inner lining of the cervix has come on to the vaginal surface (Figure 21.3) or if there is chronic inflammation (cervicitis cervical erosion), your gynaecologist may wish to take the opportunity of cauterising the cervix whilst undertaking a hysteroscopy and D and C for you. Cervicitis and cervical ectopy may be a cause of vaginal discharge, post-coital bleeding or intermenstrual bleeding (11). Cervical cauterisation destroys the ectopy or cervicitis and allows a healthy covering to develop.
