During puberty the squamo-columnar junction (cervical erosion) moves out on to the vaginal surface of the cervix. The exposed columnar epithelium can change into squamous epithelium a process called metaplasia. This area of change is the transformation zone and it is in this zone that pre-malignant change may commence.
