Although Second Hand Smoke (SHS) is widely accepted as a risk factor for coronary heart disease, there have been few studies investigating the association of SHS and stroke risk. According to a report in the August issue of Archives of Otolaryngology - Head & Neck Surgery, patients who undergo a surgical procedure that removes excess tissue from the throat (uvulopalatopharyngoplasty or UPPP) along with a surgical tonsil-removing procedure (tonsillectomy) have an increased rate of hemorrhage (bleeding) if they are smokers. Not many people know that smoking causes bladder cancer, according to a new study published in The Journal of Urology® by Drs. Seth A. Strope and James E. Montie of the University of Michigan Health System in Ann Arbor. In fact, only slightly more than one third of adults surveyed connected smoking with an increased risk of bladder cancer.
